What is the difference between a power converter and a power inverter?

2023-11-10

Power converters and power inverters are two different types of power conversion equipment.

1. Power Converter: A power converter is a device that converts electrical energy from one form to another. It can convert alternating current to direct current, or convert direct current to alternating current. Common power converters include Power Adapter, power transformers, etc. Power converters are often used to convert grid voltage to a voltage suitable for use by electronic devices, or to convert DC power from a battery to AC power.

2. Power Inverter: A power inverter is a device that converts DC power into AC power. It converts DC power into AC power so that DC power can be supplied to AC equipment. Power inverters are usually used in solar power generation systems, automotive electronic equipment, emergency power supplies, etc. to convert DC power into AC power.

The main differences are as follows:

Working principle: The power converter uses the working principle of a transformer to achieve the conversion of electrical energy by changing the voltage ratio of the input power supply and the output power supply, and the power conversion efficiency is high. The power inverter converts DC power into AC power through the working principle of high-frequency active switches and inverter transformers, and the conversion power efficiency is low.

Control method: Power converters generally use pulse width modulation control to control the output voltage and current by controlling the switching frequency and duty cycle of the switching device. Power inverters generally use PWM modulation and closed-loop control methods to control the frequency and amplitude of the output AC voltage by adjusting the switching frequency and duty cycle.

Equipment structure: The power converter is relatively simple and consists of a few components; the power inverter requires more complex components and circuit structure because it needs to convert DC to AC.

Scope of application: Power converters are mainly used in power electronic equipment, communication equipment, electronic equipment and other occasions to convert input power into the voltage and current required by the equipment. Power inverters are mainly used in solar power generation, electric vehicles, UPS power supply and other fields to convert DC power into AC power supply, such as Car Chargers.

A power converter is a device that converts electrical energy from one form to another, while a power inverter is a device that converts direct current into alternating current.
